Decision Debt

Decision Debt is what you owe when you postpone a hard call, pick a comfortable short-term fix, or let circumstances decide for you. Like technical debt, the interest compounds: options shrink, second-guessing rises, and the organization learns that drift is acceptable.

Why it matters

Decisive Leader positioning treats Decision Debt as the measurable leak behind analysis paralysis, execution drag, and the Thursday Leak. Naming it gives leaders a shared language for the Leadership Assessment and for portfolio conversations that are really about deferred judgment.

Signals

  • The same problem returns every quarter because root causes never get decided.
  • Option sets shrink—you used to have five paths; now you are choosing between two bad ones.
  • Decision hangover: constant replay without a North Star or matrix to anchor the call.
