Four Surrenders

The Four Surrenders are four failure modes where smart teams surrender judgment to machines: treating model output as oracle (Oracle Trap), trusting automation over gut when data is thin (Automation Bias), diffusing ownership when AI is in the loop (Accountability Shuffle), and losing the muscle of decisive calls (Judgment Atrophy).

Why it matters

Vol. 5 (Decisive AI) anchors AI governance language on these surrenders—not generic “AI risk.” The self-diagnostic and flagship essay give executives a vocabulary before they write a Decision Rights Charter.

Signals

  • Leaders quote model output in meetings without a human-owned decision line.
  • No one can name who is accountable when the recommendation is wrong.
  • Teams skip the blank-whiteboard test—deciding whether the question should be asked at all.
